Leeds Art Gallery has been described as ‘Probably the best collection of twentieth century British art outside London’ (John Russell Taylor, The Times), here you can see a rich variety of art on display from Leeds’ impressive collection of paintings, sculpture, drawings, watercolours and new media works. In 1997 the fine art collection was designated by the government as of national importance. The Gallery can boast a modern British sculpture collection second only to that of the Tate with a selection of works displayed in recently renovated gallery spaces. Leeds Art Gallery is linked by an adjoining bridge to the internationally important Henry Moore Institute, a centre dedicated to the study of sculpture and with its own programme of exhibitions.
Wander between galleries and see the work of well-known artists from our region, such as Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Atkinson Grimshaw, Jacob Kramer and Edward Wadsworth, paintings by internationally known artists including Francis Bacon, Stanley Spencer and Walter Sickert as well as work by contemporary artists including Paula Rego, Bridget Riley, Grayson Perry and Antony Gormley.
