Few could argue against the charms of the Tiled Hall Cafe. Part of the huge building which houses both Leeds Central Library and Leeds Art Gallery, this magnificent arched space was originally a reading room for the library, before the original features were covered by shelving in the 50s and 60s and the room eventually fell out of use.
In 2007, the space was restored to its former glory and with a blend of brightly coloured decorative tiles, gold details on the ceiling, huge marble columns and dramatic archways, it’s difficult to understand quite why the space was ever hidden in the first place.
Now, the Tiled Hall serves both as a walkway between the gallery and library and as a bustling, ever-busy cafe. The attraction of the hall is obvious. Not only is it a truly magnificent, unique building, but the cafe that lives within it serves up quality food with an emphasis on service and presentation. The food on offer is what you’d expect from a cafe, plenty of sandwiches, salads, soups, a select few hot meals, loads and loads of cake, a range of teas and coffees, and even a few beers.
