An eventful time

Budding young moviemakers should visit at Easter time when the annual Leeds Young People's Film Festival is held. Expect masterclasses workshops and special previews. Also over the Easter and August bank holidays, large scale jousting tournaments are held at the Royal Armouries Museum. Cheer on your favourite knight as they clash head-to-head for the coveted prize. The festive period is also a very special time to visit Leeds, as The Christmas Adventure reopens it's magical doors from October- January. Home to an enchanted wood, a nordic cross country ski trail, an illuminated snowflake maze plus Santa in his grotto, it really is a unique experience, bound to get you in a merry mood! In the months after Christmas, Leeds hosts the UK's largest temporary ice skating rink, The Ice Cube on Millennium Square. A nursery rink and penguin skating aids are available for young ones and learners, and it's a great excuse to work off those mince pies!

Go Wild

There are few who aren't taken in by the charms of our animal friends. For the feathered and flying variety, visit Harewood's bird garden. Feed the penguins and marvel at the macaws! Or head over to Lotherton Hall which has one of the most famous and comprehensive collections of rare and endangered birds in the country. There is also a red deer park, perfect for picnics. At Temple Newsam you can visit the Home Farm animals by day and go bat detecting by night! If you fancy a taste of the tropics without leaving Leeds you'll love Tropical World in Roundhay Park. Home to a multitude of exotic butterflies, the largest collection of equatorial plants outside Kew Gardens and the new meerkats house, it's a rainforest paradise!

Thrills

Time to let off some steam? Xscape should be your first point of call. It's cool in more ways than one, with the country's biggest real snow slope, rock climbing walls, an aerial assault course, laserzone and a glow in the dark cosmic golf experience! A journey through the carefully recreated streets and houses is a great day out for all the family. For those who prefer their history a little more gory, Thackray Museum is one of the UK's leading medical museums, telling the story of medicine and explaining how advances in medicine are changing our lives.
