Cosy up this Christmas with Leeds Grand Theatre, City Varieties Music Hall and The Hyde Park Picture House
This Christmas why not leave the busy streets of shoppers, surround yourself with Victorian splendour, sit back and let yourself be entertained.
Leeds has three beautiful venues that everyone should visit; Leeds Grand Theatre, City Varieties Music Hall and The Hyde Park Picture House are stunning heritage buildings that have each entertained the people of Yorkshire for over 100 years.
From Monday 5th to Saturday 10th December the first UK Tour of The Commitments kicks off the festive season at The Grand Theatre. Fresh from the West End, where it received rave reviews, and packed with more than 20 classic songs performed live on stage including Try A Little Tenderness, River Deep, Mountain High, In The Midnight Hour and Mustang Sally this show promises a party atmosphere just in time for the festive season.
On Sunday 11th December, for one night only, Elaine Paige takes to the stage performing her favourite tracks from contemporary songwriters in a stripped back performance.
Monday 12th December sees Rock and West End Royalty team up for an evening of acoustic music; Queen’s Brian May stars alongside Musical Theatre star Kerry Ellis in The Candlelit Christmas Concert.
For the Christmas Holidays – Thursday December 15th to Saturday January 7th - Northern Ballet bring one of the world’s most famous fairy tales to life with their magical performance of Beauty and the Beast; this treasured classic is reimagined with a kaleidoscope of colour and an infectious score played by Northern Ballet Sinfonia.
Over at City Varieties Music Hall the now-famous Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto, which has become a necessary-date-in-the-diary for young and old since its launch five years ago, gives Sleeping Beauty the rock ‘n’ roll treatment.
The soundtrack, played live on stage by the cast, is crammed with hit songs; this year’s treats include The Eagles, Whitney Houston, Marvin Gaye and Cher to name but a few. Expect familiar characters, corny jokes and the legendary ‘boulder fight’ in a Christmas show that has something for the whole family: Saturday 26th November to Sunday January 8th
For a traditional treat, take a trip back in time to the beautiful Hyde Park Picture House for the classic Christmas film It’s A Wonderful Life. Enjoy seasonal goodies in the warm surroundings of the plush red auditorium as the distinctive gas lighting flickers in the background: December 23rd, 24th and 26th.
That’s Christmas. Right there.
