Spend Your Christmas With Opera North

Opera North welcomes one and all to their annual programme of Christmas concerts with the Orchestra of Opera North - a festive family fixture and the perfect way to celebrate the season.

As part of the Visit Leeds ‘Magical Leeds’ season a free Festive Fanfare at Trinity Leeds on 10 December will herald the beginning of the company’s Christmas celebrations. The Chorus of Opera North and a brass ensemble from the Orchestra of Opera North will be joined by 150 children from Windmill and Low Road Primary Schools who have been participating in Opera North’s In Harmony Community Residency programme. The half hour concert of much-loved Christmas hymns interspersed with rousing brass band music will begin at 2.30pm on the ground floor of the shopping centre – and singing along is encouraged.

Continuing the festivities in spectacular fashion, the Orchestra of Opera North are joined by Leeds Festival Chorus for a beautifully crafted performance of one of the best-loved musical events of the season, Handel’s Messiah at Leeds Town Hall on 12 December.

Kicking off the Orchestra of Opera North’s Yuletide family concert programme is a double bill of The Snowman & Paddington Bear’s First Concert. This charming event for all ages tells the story of Paddington Bear as he goes to his very first concert and hears the music of Schubert, Haydn and Rossini. This is followed by the soundtrack to every child's Christmas, The Snowman, played to the iconic film projected on the big screen. Catch this perfect prelude to festivities at Royal Hall, Harrogate on 15 December and Leeds Town Hall on 20 December.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

On 17 December at Dewsbury Town Hall the Orchestra of Opera North will be joined by the combined voices of the Chorus of Opera North, Opera North Children’s Chorus and Youth Chorus for a feast of seasonal favorites in A Joyous Christmas, part of the Kirklees Concert Season. This delightful selection includes excerpts from Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and plenty of sing-a-long festive favourites.

An atmospheric candlelit concert for the holiday season, The Night Before Christmas brings a wonderland of festive music, carols and spectacular images to the Howard Assembly Room on 18 December. The halls are decked with holly and the Yuletide log lit for a feast of music to banish the most stubborn winter blues, from Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé, Bach and Handel to carols and Billie Holiday.

For those looking for an alternative way to celebrate Christmas time, the Howard Assembly Room presents a spooktacular festive treat in Tim Burton's delightfully dark Yuletide fable The Nightmare Before Christmas on 19 December. And for a chance to make their own Pumpkin King, families can come along to an exciting puppet-making workshop before the film from 10.30am.

To toast in the New Year, Opera North invites audiences to be swept off their feet with an afternoon of Viennese classics, the ever popular Viennese Whirl. This year's programme includes excerpts from Johann Strauss II Die Fledermaus and Lehár's Die lustige Witwe. Conducted by locally trained John Rigby, with soprano Jennifer France, this jubilant afternoon concert opens at Huddersfield Town Hall on 30 December and comes to Leeds Town Hall for New Year’s Eve, 31 December.
