Leeds CAMRA - 200+ Real Ales in one Night!

Leeds CAMRA carried out their 2nd real ale census of Leeds City Centre on Thursday 28th July.

A similar survey had been carried out two years previously, and Leeds CAMRA aim to undertake a similar survey every two years. The aim is to capture information, and better understand how the drinking scene in Leeds is changing over time.

Thankfully the earlier rain had moved away leaving 40 intrepid souls with a warm evening to visit the City Centre bars of Leeds in the name of research.
Overall, the survey was a great success with 86 licensed premises being visited in the one evening.

The results are as follows (with the previous 2014 survey’s figures in brackets for comparison).

NB. the results are solely for real ales (in accordance with CAMRA definition of real ale).

No. of bars with real ale available – 80 (66).

No. of real ale lines available - 372 (300).

No. of different real ales – 211 (189).

No. of different breweries represented – 118 (91).

No. of Yorks. breweries represented out of the above – 49 (40).

No. of bars with 6 or more real ales – 29 (25).

The Duck & Drake again had the most real ales available with 15, followed by Tapped on 12, Whitelocks on 11, and The Hop with 10.

The most popular real ale was again Leeds Pale appearing in 22 of the 80 bars. This was a long way ahead of second placed Sharp’s Doom Bar in 9 bars, and Greene King IPA/Ilkley Mary Jane both in 8.

A special congratulations should go to both Foley’s Cask House, and Whitelocks who both had real ales from Spanish breweries on the night.

Leeds CAMRA would like to say thanks to everyone who took part, and also to Leeds Brewery Tap who once again provided accommodation for the command centre, free of charge.

Clearly these results highlight Leeds City centre as being a mecca for real ales and real ale drinkers. The increase in diversity of ales and brewers seen since 2014 is encouraging and indicative of Leeds status as one of Britain’s best cities for beer lovers.

Keith Sunderland (Leeds CAMRA treasurer), Census Organiser is available for further details and comment.
