Travelling Man’s Celebrating 25 Years
Leeds comic book, graphic novel and board game store Travelling Man is celebrating its 25th birthday by treating its visitors to cake, treats, prizes and generous discounts. It’s all taking place at its stores on Saturday 6 August, the exact anniversary of the day in 1991 when it first opened its doors.
Travelling Man is situated at 32 Central Road in the heart of Leeds. It was founded by Nabil Homsi, a self-confessed comic book addict, to supply a burgeoning community of fellow enthusiasts in the city. The store was a success, and in the intervening years he’s opened stores in York, Manchester and Newcastle.
While many outsiders’ view of the world of comic books and graphic novels is restricted to super heroes and villains, in reality it’s a deep and varied genre covering every subject from politics, sex and drugs to fantasy and history. Board gaming is equally varied, and again much different to the outsider’s view of Dungeons and Dragons and its ilk.
The celebrations are as much a way to thank its loyal customers for their support as to introduce new customers who might never have given a thought to the genre.
Homsi says: “We’re really looking forward to Saturday – it’s going to be a great day across all our stores. We’ve ordered the cakes and ice cream, there are treats, sweets and drinks, and we’re setting up tables to get some serious gaming going. There will spot prizes for cosplayers who are well turned out, and maybe even a discount or two as a big thank you to 25 years’ worth of customers. If you’ve never stepped foot in a comic book store, come and see what it’s all about. A warm welcome is guaranteed!”
Doors open at 10 a.m. on Saturday 6 August and when the shop closes at 6 p.m. the over-18s will be moving on to Crowd of Favours to see out the rest of the day in celebratory mood.
