The Czech Year

The Czech Year

The debut feature by the great Czech animator and puppeteer Jiri Trnka was made in 1947, arguably the most ambitious and original animated film since Disney’s Fantasia. The Czech Year is a cinematic suite in six parts based on Mikoláš Aleš’s Collection of National Folk Songs revealing different folk customs and traditions of the Czech countryside through the calendar that have been preserved for centuries. The film went on to win the Grand National Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1948, launching the international career of one of the most influential animators of all time.
