In 2011 Leeds City Council decided to close some of its libraries to save money - one of the threatened libraries was Shadwell. A committee was formed to see if we could run the library as an independent venture. We can!
From January 2013 the library has remained open staffed entirely by volunteers. Other helpers have improved the building, helped us provide tea and coffee, got the computer system working - the list goes on.
On May 16th the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Ann Castle, declared Shadwell Independent Library officially open and we are now a registered charity.
There is no charge to join our library. There is no limit to the number of books you can borrow, and we operate an exceptionally lenient system of fines for late books!
We have a modern computerised system for cataloguing and the issue of books. We can offer free WiFi if you have your own laptop, and there is a desktop computer for public use if you have not.
We can borrow books for you from the Leeds City Library system (they make a small charge for this).
We offer tea, coffee and biscuits - there is no charge but we hope you will make a contribution.
You can also hire the library for a very modest charge for your own event.
