The Great Omar

The Great Omar

Details

In 1911, Southeran’s Bookshop in London commissioned the binding of a copy of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám [http://www.biblio.com/booksearch/title/rubaiyat-of-omar-khayyam/order/pricedesc]. The work was to be carried out by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, renowned London bookbinders famed for their exquisite bindings who were told that cost was not a consideration. The resulting leather bound book, decorated in gold and precious stones was eventually sold to a buyer in New York and despatched in 1912 on the Titanic to finally end up at the bottom of the Atlantic. Join The Leeds library's bookbinder in residence Brian Cole, as he recounts this fascinating story.
