The Journey of 'Alfred': Looking Through the Score

The Journey of 'Alfred': Looking Through the Score

Details

part of Left Bank Opera Festival 2017

As with many operas from the 18th Century, musicologists, conductors and editors must look through several contemporary sources to piece together a full score for performance.

The University of Leeds Library Special Collections [https://library.leeds.ac.uk/special-collections] is home to three early printed editions of ‘Alfred’, comprising editions printed in 1740, 1751, and 1757.

Join us to take a look at these original editions, discuss how and why they vary so much, and what this means for us performing the opera today.
