Ben Jonson's Folio at 400

Ben Jonson's Folio at 400

This illustrated lecture explores the significance of Ben Jonson’s landmark folio volume of Works, printed 400 years ago in 1616. The beautifully printed book _The Works of Benjamin Jonson_ was an important precursor of Shakespeare's first folio (published just seven years later, and building on Jonson's example). Jonson's Works was the first English printed collection to be made up primarily of plays performed on the public stage, so it made significant claims for the literary quality and staying-power of the contemporary theatre. This lecture will look at the book in detail, examining how it came to be made and the features of its printing, and exploring the personal and cultural context in which it has to be read. This talk is free, but spaces are limited so booking is essential.
