Rachael Young: Out

Rachael Young: Out

Created and performed with Dwayne Antony

OUT  is about shape shifting in a bid to fit in; to be black enough, straight enough, Jamaican enough...

Challenging homophobia and transphobia within Caribbean communities, OUT is a conversation between two bodies, reclaiming dancehall and celebrating queerness amongst the bittersweet scent of oranges.

Embracing personal, political and cultural dissonance, this defiant act of self expression smashes through the silence, summoning voices and re-enacting movements in a chaotic mash-up of remembrance and reinvention.

OUT is being created with kind support from The Yard, IBT, Arts Council England, Curve Leicester, South East Dance and Greenwich University.  It is part of Rachael Young’s extended research project: The Freedom Project.

Artist Bio:
Rachael Young makes theatre, live art, interactive installations and socially engaged projects, working in the spaces between disciplines and discovering new languages for performance through collaboration. Her current work explores notions of freedom and bravery and is inspired by autobiographical experience in relation to socio-political landscapes.

Rachael has recently presented work at Steakhouse Live, //BUZZCUT//, The Lowry, Battersea Arts Centre, Tate Modern, New Art Exchange, Contact, Derby Theatre and Nottingham Playhouse and has been supported by Arts Council England, Arts Connect, mac birmingham, Curve, Ovalhouse and BBC Performing Arts Fund.

Dwayne Antony is a dancer and choreographer, who creates solo and collaborative movement based performance. Dwayne has created 2 solo works; ‘PlanB’ and ‘L.Law’ (ACE funded), both of which explored autobiographical themes. He has collaborated on various contemporary dance projects, including Joseph Mercier’s ‘Cruising, Clubbing, Fucking’ and ‘Conversation – Part 1’ with Hannah Buckley.
