Im Forsthaus is a new one-movement concert work showcasing three favourite numbers from the opera. In 1884 Brahms composed two songs that feature a delicate interplay between voice and viola. A beguiling instrumental version introduces the sensuous timbre of the alto flute, that perfectly captures the warmth of Brahms’ vocal part. Debussy intended his exquisite work for flute, viola and harp to be one of a set of six sonatas. He was, however, able to complete only three before his death in 1918. This beautifully restrained piece, here re-cast with piano, is a highlight of the impressionist repertoire. The concert ends with Duruflé’s only chamber work, a powerful and sonorous trio, written in 1928. His love of Gregorian chant informs the theme and ensuing variations, and a final burst of implacable energy carries the piece to an exciting conclusion.
