PHILOSOPHY & FILM: The Third Man

PHILOSOPHY & FILM: The Third Man

Details

The Third Man, directed by Carol Reed and written by Graham Greene, is acknowledged to be one of the truly great British films. Released in 1949, the film follows the progress of an unassuming and naive popular writer, Holly Martins, as he visits a divided and ruined Vienna shortly after the Second World War, only to discover that his friend, Harry Lime, has just died. In his investigation into what happened, the film explores the nature of loyalty, treachery, complicity and amorality. The brief talk after the film, by Dr. Gerald Lang, University of Leeds, will address some of these themes.
