From Synagogue to Stage; a behind-the-scenes look

Discover Riley Theatre’s past as part of this year’s Heritage Open Day weekend. Book a free place on one of our guided tours, and learn more about the Grade II listed site's iconic status for the Leeds Jewish Community.

Hear stories from local people who remember the building before it was converted into a studio, rehearsal and performance space as part of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, and gain an insight into the traditions that shaped it.

Tours will be led by Diane Saunders and Philippa Lester, authors of the book ‘From the Leylands to Leeds 17’, and local community activist Alan Benstock.

‘From the Leylands to Leeds 17: Jewish Leeds in words and images’ is a book which celebrates and chronicles the migration of Jews to Leeds from the late 1880s to the present day.

You will have unique backstage access to areas usually off-limits to the public, as we reveal many of the building’s original features that hark back to its days as a former place of worship.

Join us as we unlock the local history of one of Yorkshire’s largest dedicated theatre spaces for dance.

Spaces are limited so please ensure you book early to avoid disappointment.
