Kicking off the series and brand new for 2017, Leeds City Council have teamed up with Opera North for an exciting trio of outdoor classical events in the heart of Leeds.

Opera North’s critically acclaimed 50-piece orchestra will be bringing club anthems, operatic greats, songs from the shows and a special orchestrated screening of Back to the Future to the square.

And that’s not all. There’ll be family-friendly film screenings, interactive performances, street food and live music from 70’s and 80s sensations – the perfect way to make the most of those long sunny days.

And for the finale: a bright and colourful celebration as Millennium Square transforms into the centre of the 11th annual Leeds Pride, hosting speakers and live entertainment on the parade stage throughout the day.

Friday 28th July - The Symphonic Sounds of Back to Basics
The Symphonic Sound of Back to Basics celebrates Leeds’ sensational musical offering as two of the city’s cultural institutions come together for this special one-off performance. In collaboration with Back to Basics founder Dave Beer, Opera North’s 50-piece symphony orchestra and live vocalists will be performing huge dancefloor anthems with some very special guests. It promises to be a Leeds party like no other.

Saturday 29th July - A Night at the Opera with the Orchestra of Opera North
Performing some of the finest operatic arias and show-stopping songs from the musicals (and including exclusive previews from Opera North’s upcoming season at Leeds Grand Theatre) the Orchestra of Opera North will serve up a feast of classic masterpieces, lesser-known delights and toe-tapping numbers. Featuring music from Madama Butterfly, Don Giovanni, Carousel, Kiss Me, Kate and more.

Sunday 30th July - Back to the Future - in concert with the Orchestra of Opera North
Get ready to celebrate this unforgettable movie classic as you’ve never seen and heard it before! Fans old and new can experience this much-loved coming-of-age story with the Orchestra of Opera North performing Alan Silvestri’s dazzling musical score in synch with the movie. Audiences will also be in for an exclusive treat: approximately twenty minutes of brand new music added by award-winning composer Silvestri to the film's score especially for these unique live orchestra presentations.

Monday 31st July to 1st August – The Film House on the Square

Wednesday 2nd August – ¡VAMOS!– Music and Street Feast (Free)
One of the UK’s biggest and longest running community arts festivals covering Latino/Hispanic/Lusophone (Portuguese) culture returns to Leeds for a free family-friendly event in the heart of the city. ¡VAMOS! will feature an eclectic mix of music, dance, art and cuisine from Latin and Lusophone influences.

Thursday 3rd August – Jazz Leeds presents Festival Day of Jazz (Free)
What better way to spend a summer afternoon than relaxing in Millennium Square, listening to jazz music and eating delicious street food? The Inaugural Festival Day of Jazz, organised by Jazz Leeds, brings that experience to the heart of Leeds. There’ll be free jazz music throughout the afternoon and a variety of quality street food stalls. Plus, bring the kids along for a special beginners guide to playing jazz in the Carriageworks. Finally, don’t miss the chance to see Leeds legend Snake Davis headline the evening!

Friday 4th August - The Real Thing, Heatwave & Jaki Graham
One of the most successful black rock/soul acts of the 1970s, The Real Thing will be reviving the glory days with a selection of the band’s hits. Plus, Keith Wilder’s Heatwave will be reviving soul classics and Britain’s first female chart-topping soul singer Jaki Graham will be performing her chart-toppers.

Sunday 6th August - Leeds Pride Parade Stage
The 11th annual Leeds Pride is the biggest celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans* life in Yorkshire. Millennium Square will once again host the Parade Stage, with speakers and live entertainment throughout the day. Lucy Whittaker, Blonde Electra, and Leeds-based indie rockers The Brazen are just the first of many great acts to be announced.

    By Road: From all routes head towards Leeds city centre. Arriving in Leeds, follow the signs for the loop road. This road will take you around the city centre on a one way system. Millennium Square is located at junction four of the loop. Parking is located signposted around the city centre, with coach parking found next to it.

    By public transport: From Leeds city station exit the train station by the Queens hotel and cross over the road by the Park Plaza hotel. Walk straight up Park Row and cross The Headrow. Continue straight on and cross over Great George Street. Millenium Square is found straight ahead. From Leeds bus station head towards the market on New York Street, turn right onto Vicar Lane and at the crossroads, turn left onto the Headrow. Walk down The Headrow until you get to a crossroads with Nero on your left and Radisson SAS on your right. Turn right towards Radisson SAS and then walk straight on to Great George Street. Millenium Square is found straight ahead.
