Vegan Meals In Leeds

As a vegan when I first moved to Leeds from London I thought my chances of dining out on more than salad and chips were slim. How wrong could I be?!

Leeds is a gourmet paradise for vegetarians and vegans. Whilst lots of chain restaurants are now offering dedicated vegan menus it’s the local independent eateries which are really showing how versatile and delicious plant based food can be.

There really is something for every occasion. If I am heading out for the evening I might treat myself to a meal from Roots and Fruits in the Grand Arcade first. It’s a great place to eat if you’re on your way to catch a show at Leeds Grand Theatre.

The set menu boasts lots of colourful and creative dishes many of which are either vegan or can be adapted on request. Everything on the specials board is vegan and it’s hard to resist the pull of the burger of the day. The friendly owners are always on hand to help if you have any special requests.

Tucked away on Swan Street just a short way from the hustle and bustle of the town centre is Global Tribe Coffee Shop.

This is the place I head to if I want to escape the crowds whilst enjoying quality coffee and cake in a laid back and friendly atmosphere.

On the other side of town is Humpit which recently celebrated its first birthday and has become a favourite lunch fixture for me and many others judging by its popularity. Nestled in the heart of the magnificent Corn Exchange building its heaven for hummus lovers.

There is no graceful way to eat my favourite the Half and Half (a full pita stuffed with a ridiculously generous amount of freshly prepared falafel and hummus all topped with salad and pickles), but who cares when food tastes this good!

When my Omni family are visiting we make a bee line for a laid back lunch at Nichols in Chapel Allerton. Despite the comprehensive and delicious set menu we are often seduced by something more exotic from the specials board and there is always a fine selection of homemade cakes, many of them vegan, which it would be rude not to sample.

You can also pick up a healthy salad box and some decedent treats to take home for later, my favourite are the chocolate and peanut butter crispy squares which I simply can’t resist.

These are just a few of my favourite vegan friendly places in Leeds, there are many more still to explore and I’m certainly up for the challenge. Gemma x
