  • National health and care bodies including: NHS England, NHS Digital, NHS Leadership Academy and Health Education England
  • Major local public sector organisations including: Leeds City Council (2nd largest local authority in England by population), NHS Leeds CCG, NHS Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust, Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust and Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust
  • A strong private sector and a thriving third sector - not to mention three world class universities.

  • Leeds is home to 160 med tech and health informatics companies
  • Leeds boasts the largest concentration of health informaticians in the UK
  • 22% of the total number of digital health jobs across England and Wales are based in Leeds
  • We conceptualized and developed the widely recognised Leeds Care Record(a joined-up digital care record which enables clinical and care staff to view real-time health and care information across care providers and between different systems) supported by two of the largest patient record providers who are based in the city: TPP (SystmOne) and EMIS
  • 18% of all med tech patents are in Leeds

National bodies who have their headquarters in Leeds:

  • NHS England - sets the priorities and direction of the NHS and encourages and informs the national debate to improve health and care. Responsible for over £100bn annual health care spend
  • NHS Digital – the national information and technology partner to the health and social care system using digital technology to transform the NHS and social care.
  • NHS Leadership Academy –development of outstanding leadership in health, in order to improve people’s health and their experiences of the NHS and responsible for leadership development and training throughout the NHS
  • Health Education England –delivery of excellent healthcare and health improvement to the patients and public of England by ensuring that the workforce of today and tomorrow has the right numbers, skills, values and behaviours, at the right time and in the right place.

The local picture

Leeds has the best health outcomes of the eight core cities in England and is a pioneer in delivering integrated health and social care services for local people supported by a 57,000 strong workforce across the NHS, local authority, third sector and independent sector. Key assets include:

  • Leeds Academic Health Partnership - one of the biggest partnerships of its kind in the UK, the LAHP harnesses world-class research and education, cutting-edge clinical practice and a real commitment to Leeds people to help transform great ideas into life-changing initiatives.
  • NHS Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust – one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe and also one of the largest providers of specialist hospital services in the country. Home to Leeds Cancer Centre, offering some of the most advanced treatment and care for patients with cancer anywhere in the world.
  • The Leeds Centre for Personalised Medicine and Health - harnessing technological and medical advances to enable more informed decision making so that therapies can be carefully targeted to individuals
  • The Leeds Health and Care Academy - bringing together the planning, coordination, resource and delivery of learning and development for staff working in health and care in the city.
