A toast to Yorkshire Day as Oulton Hall launches Gin Afternoon Tea

Flavours of Yorkshire will be added to afternoon tea at Oulton Hall this Yorkshire Day, with diners encouraged to celebrate with a complimentary glass of Harrogate-based Slingsby’s Rhubarb Gin.

The Yorkshire-themed afternoon tea menu will walk guests through the county with a smoked Ribblesdale and heritage tomato tartlet and a Wensleydale-topped Yorkshire tea loaf. For those with a sweet tooth, handmade pastries sit alongside scones dotted with chunks of fresh rhubarb and cherry accompanied by Stamfrey clotted cream and strawberry preserve.

Yorkshire Day is celebrated annually on 1st August and goes back to 1975, after an idea to have a day to celebrate the county was discussed at a Yorkshire Riding Society meeting. To this day, society members read a declaration of the integrity of Yorkshire at the gates guarding the walled city of York. An equally refined affair, the Gin Afternoon Tea will be served by a team of butlers at the 18th century mansion, headed by Peter McMahon, a member of the Guild of Butlers.

Head butler, Peter McMahon, said: “Afternoon tea is more popular than ever at Oulton Hall, and Yorkshire Day is the perfect occasion to bring a taste of our county to the menu. We are also able to offer our specially-made Oulton blend of tea, from Taylors of Harrogate, which uses larger leaves to give a perfect balance of strength, colour, flavour and character.”

Marcus Black, co-founder and managing director at Slingsby Gin added: “We’re excited to share our Rhubarb Gin with customers of Oulton Hall to celebrate Yorkshire Day. Made with hand-grown Yorkshire rhubarb the spirit started as a small limited edition batch but has become a firm customer favourite.”
Following Yorkshire Day, the Gin Afternoon Tea will be available seven days a week between 2pm and 6pm at a supplement of £5 per person.

Traditional afternoon tea is available from £22 per person. To find out more, visit
