In collaboration with Beacons Metro, & Or Emporium and Wisdom Teeth Records, Kalyan Presents is kicking off their second event of the winter months (following on from their winter debut at the Northern Quarters new venue, The Brunswick, to celebrate the opening of The British Arts Show) with what will be a stunningly vibrant venue takeover of Headrow House. Expect a dynamic mix of installations throughout the building, interactive visuals, live art on the terrace, pop up performances and video art screenings. Come early to explore the different art installations that will be hidden amongst the buildings many stairwells and corridors, as well as main rooms.

Portico (formerly Portico Quartet) are headlining, supported by Kalyan, Boomerang Parlour, Emu and Suga. There will be a late night takeover from Wisdom Teeth Records.

Artist Information

Portico’s pioneering sound, which blends jazz, folk, synthpop and electronica, captured the attention of many when they were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize back in 2008. Formerly a quartet, the new three-strong line-up have been going from strength to strength since then, adapting their sound from their jazz and acoustic roots and moving into a darker electronic realm. Following their recent release, ‘Living Fields’ on Ninja Tune, we could not be more excited to have them take the stage alongside some of our great home grown Leeds talent!

Supporting will be Kalyan, combining dub, jazz, soul and rock. Coming off the back of a sold-out headline show in Brixton, their recent One Love festival appearance, and their exciting new debut release, ‘Soul Searching’, regulars of the Kalyan Presents nights will know to expect one of the most electrifying live shows Leeds has to offer.

Based in murky (but “mint”) Manchester, Boomerang Parlour combine acid techno, jazz and hipÔÇÉhop to create a searing live sound that’s all their own. Founded by guitarist and song-scribbler Will Havard, in collaboration with some of Manchester’s finest young musicians the group combine a compelling concoction of influences from The Police and Paul Simon to Squarepusher, Cocteau Twins and Jojo Mayer/Nerve to create their sound.

Joining us from across the Pennines, we will also be hosting Emu. The Manchester-based group bring a smooth and uplifting Nu-Jazz Fusion sound, combined with electronic eastern influences. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have them play their first Kalyan Presents!

Wisdom Teeth Records will be continuing the party from 12, ensuring everybody is still on their feet dancing. The independent Leeds/Bristol label have only been around for a year and have already been making waves in the bass music scene. With three killer releases under their belt, and a fourth on it’s way, you can be sure that this label is here to stay.
