'Chelping' returns for its Autumn programme to the Leeds Library (Commercial Street NOT Central Library) with another star-studded line-up in one of the UK's most unique and atmospheric venues. This event is presented as part of The Leeds Library's 250th Anniversary celebrations. Curated by Matt Abbott, one of the UK's leading spoken word artists, the night will include open mic slots followed by a set from Sabrina Mahfouz, more open mic slots and a final set from Kirsty Taylor. The night will be hosted by Matt Abbott. We strongly advise that you purchase tickets in advance online.


Sabrina Mahfouz has recently been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and is the recipient of the 2018 King's Alumni Arts & Culture Award. She has been shortlisted for The Stage Award for Best Solo Performance, a Women in the Creative Industries Award, an Arts Foundation Award for Performance Poetry and has won a Sky Arts Academy Award for Poetry, a Westminster Prize for New Playwrights and a Fringe First Award. She also writes for children and her play _Zeraffa Giraffa _won a 2018 Off West End Award.

Sabrina is the editor of _The Things I Would Tell You: British Muslim Women Write_, a 2017 Guardian Book of the Year and currently nominated for The People's Book Prize.

She is an essay contributor to the multi-award-winning _The Good Immigrant _and is currently writing a biopic of the legendary ‘Godfather of Grime’, rapper and producer Wiley, for Pulse Films.


Kirsty Taylor is a teacher and writer from Bradford. Winner of BBC Verb New Voices, she has shared her work on Radio 3 along with festivals and events across the country. Passionate about people and fascinated by their stories, Kirsty gives real insight into the lives of others through her rhythmical style.


Chelping' programmer Matt Abbott is a poet and activist from Wakefield. His one-man show 'Two Little Ducks' embarks on a 22-date UK theatre tour this autumn, after receiving 5* reviews at last summer's Edinburgh Fringe. The tour will be accompanied by a collection on Verve Poetry Press.

He is the founding owner of indie spoken word record label Nymphs & Thugs.
