The Book as an Object

The Book as an Object

A look at the different methods of book construction and how the process has evolved historically, from the first books inscribed on clay tablets in the 7th C, BC to modern “perfect” binding.

Different types of binding will be examined and, where possible, illustrated by examples from the Library’s collections and the significance of the different types of materials used will be explored from Elizabethan embroidery to modern inlaid leather bindings .

A talk by Brian Cole of The Castle Bindery, on behalf of The Leeds Library.

This event forms part of our Festival of the Mind season in homage to Joseph Priestley, one of our founder members, which is running from Tuesday 20th November to Saturday 1st December, and is supported by Arts@Leeds and Leeds City Council.
