Come and Sing Haydn's Harmoniemesse

Come and Sing Haydn's Harmoniemesse

Details

Join St Matthew’s Orchestra and Choir at one of their famous weekend workshops, this July working on Haydn’s _Harmoniemesse_. As attendees at their previous singing weekend know, the weekend is filled with music (and some hard work), culminating in an unforgettable evening performance, with professional orchestra and soloists.

F.J. Haydn’s _Harmoniemesse, Hob. XXII:14_, was written in 1802 and is his last major work. The title roughly translates as ‘wind band mass’ (‘Harmonie’ being the German word for a wind band). It is ambitiously scored, calling for double winds (flutes, oboes, clarinets and bassoons), and double brass (two French horns and two trumpets), together with the usual timpani, strings, and organ.

Haydn employs extensive choral writing throughout, and some wonderful solo passages. It is in his quintessential style, using signature ‘surprises’ and unceasing contrasts between loud and soft, suspension and release.

It is both challenging and highly rewarding!

St Matthew’s Orchestra is a new per-service orchestra venture based in Chapel Allerton. It was established in 2017 with the aim of providing recent music graduates and students the opportunity to undertake paid professional engagements, before entering fully the highly competitive music market.

St Matthew’s Choir is the resident choir of St Matthew’s Church in Chapel Allerton, a thriving suburban parish church, with some of the best acoustic in North Leeds. They are no strangers to organising come and sing events, with over two hundred happy (returning!) participants.

The day will be led by Josh Aljosa Skorja, who is rapidly making a name for himself as one of the most exciting choral conductors in the North of England. Josh studied musicology in his native Slovenia and conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He is the Music Director at St Matthew’s and leads the Pontefract Choral Society and York Cantores Chamber Choir.

Talented young soloists from Rocket Opera will be completing the line-up at the evening performance.

If you have some experience of reading music or even singing in a choir—definitely yes! And don’t worry, there will be ample time on Saturday to get familiar with the notes.

If you’re not sure, please do not hesitate to be in touch or, better still, simply come along, and find out.
