100 Years of Bradford Painters

100 Years of Bradford Painters

Details

Bradford was a very different place between 1850, when artist James Lobley was painting, compared to 1950 when a young David Hockney was training at Bradford School of Art. The textile industry had an enormous impact on the city and the population grew from 13, 000 in 1800 to over 200,000 in 1900.

The 1850s and 60s in particualr were prosperous decades for business as Bradford established itself as the world centre of the 'worsted' trade (fine woollen cloth).

As the textile trade expanded so did the cultural life of Bradford and in the early 1890s a budget was created to purchase works to build a public art collection.

This exhibition surveys some of the variety of the great Bradford painters in this collection considering the period 1850 to 1950 and the context of what life was like at the time the artists were painting.
