They Came, They Sewed, They Stayed

They Came, They Sewed, They Stayed

In collaboration with ‘The 1152 Club’, Leeds Museums & Galleries Services.

The ‘1152 Club’ — based in the spectacular surroundings of Kirkstall Abbey — meet every other Friday to listen to guest speakers on a variety of fascinating topics.

This week’s talk will focus on the experiences of the Irish women who left Ireland during the 1950’s and 1960’s; the journey and their memories of arriving in inner city industrial Leeds from rural Ireland with many finding work in the then vibrant tailoring industry or other similar often low paid jobs in the public sector or health service and how many of those friendships made remain to the present day.
