Yorkshire Open Hat Throwing Championship 2018

Yorkshire Open Hat Throwing Championship 2018

We will be joined on Yorkshire Day the 1st of August by the inventor of ‘Competitive Hat Throwing’ Glyn Watkins, for our first time hosting the Yorkshire Open Hat Throwing Championship here in Leeds. All visitors to the museum on the day will be eligible for entering and hats will be provided.

Glyn is a Bradford based poet and showman. He created competitive hat throwing around a decade ago as an ‘Uncut Ilkley Fringe’ event at White Wells, on the edge of Ilkley Moor (Baht ’at!).

The sport involves throwing hats at a target and is now governed by the Transnational Incorporated Federation of Formally Thrown Hat Associations, or T.I.F.F.T.H.A. Rules require all hats be safe to throw, and no metal is allowed, not even in bowlers.

Glyn was recently interviewed on BBC Radio 5 Live about the sport, where Danny Baker declared: ““You know what? This is the people’s sport…”

Leeds Industrial Museum is the perfect venue for this championship - the flat cap was the headwear of choice for most overseeres who would have worked in this and other woollen mills - and Yorkshire Day is a fitting day for the event to take place.

Running from 11am to 3pm on Wednesday 1st August 2018, entry to the competition is included in museum admission charges.
