Talk: Childbirth before the NHS

Talk: Childbirth before the NHS

Details

Professor Barry Doyle reveals what was it like to give birth and bring up a baby in one of one of England's largest industrial cities before universal health services.

Between the wars Leeds saw a huge rise in women having their babies in hospital while organisations like Leeds Babies' Welcome looked after mothers and new borns.

This talk will highlight the importance of mutual aid, charity and the local authorities to the childbirth experience and suggest that maternity and motherhood were crucial to society and politics in a city dominated by women workers.

THIS TALK IS PART OF A PROGRAMME OF AFTERNOON WOMEN'S HISTORY TALKS LINKED TO ABBEY HOUSE MUSEUM'S 2018 EXHIBITION A WOMAN'S PLACE.

The exhibition features stories and objects from strong pioneering women such as Leonora Cohen and Nicola Adams, from 1860 to the present day. Discover how everyday life has changed for women in the home, school and workplace.
