Potions and Powders: beauty and medications to die

Potions and Powders: beauty and medications to die

With Dr Stella Baraklianou (University of Huddersfield)

The talk will centre on objects from the Leeds Museums and Galleries collections centred such as chemists bottles, beauty powder products for women and potions for babies  like Mrs Wilmslow’s cough syrup, exploring their historical context. Together we will uncover what dangers  lie in these seemingly innocent objects and what dangers lurk in the house especially for women and babies in the Victorian era. Some verbal interaction may be expected.
Dr Baraklianou was also interviewed as part of the publicity for the exhibition:

Dr Baraklianou (b. Greece)  is an artist and academic, interested in still-life and objects. In her research and practice she combines photography with writing.  She has exhibited her work internationally, including “Photography is Magic” at the Aperture Foundation, New York, July 2016.  Her work is held in private collections as well as the Paul D. Fleck Library and Archives Artists Book Centre, Banff, Canada. She is Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield and online tutor for  the MA Falmouth Flexible Photography course.

A talk to tie in with Abbey House Museum's Danger Zone exhibition.
