Girl Gang Leeds presents International Women's Day

Girl Gang Leeds presents International Women's Day

Last International Women's Day was so much fun, let's do it again!

This time we have inspirational workshops and talks from The Sunday Practise [], Louisa Foley - Are We Nearly Bare Yet, Emma Low - Pot Yer Tits Away Luv, Kristyna Baczynski - Illustration & Comics [], Leeds Arts University [] and Eve Finlay Miller.

FREE, no ticket necessary, but arrive early to grab the best spot in the house. Feel free to come to just the daytime sessions or the evening, or even both if you’d like to catch it all!

This event is open to people of all genders, we think everyone should hear what these speakers have to say.

This event is part of our week-long event series to celebrate International Women's Day and is in partnership with SUPER Friendz [].

The fantastic poster for this event was created by Bobbi Rae, check out more of her work here: []

6 pm - 9:30 pm: Join us from six for an evening of inspiring talks with some of our favourite people. There will also be time for Q&A's so you can find out the answers to your burning questions.

The Sunday Practise

The Sunday Practise is a live music and poetry night currently based at Sela Bar, Leeds. Set up in April 2013 as Leeds Cypher, the event has grown to be a well established night of the Leeds spoken word community.

With local and international acts, The Sunday Practise is a great networking and social event that encourages artist collaborations and building new relationships. []

Louisa Foley - Are We Nearly Bare Yet

Louisa Foley is a Leeds based illustrator behind the project Are We Nearly Bare Yet. The project aims to subvert the male gaze and reclaim ownership of ‘The Nude’ for self-identifying women.

She highlights the diversity, beauty and even humour of the female form using illustration, colour and her subjects poses. In doing so she aims to lead the viewer away from typical judgements of the female form whilst liberating women. []

Emma Low - Pot Yer Tits Away Luv

Emma is an artist originally from Edinburgh who is now based in Leeds. She quit her job to pursue her love of pottery and has literally no experience of working with clay apart from a 10 week night course. She is living proof that dreams do come true.

Emma's first tit pot was a self-portrait as a gift for Christmas in 2016. Emma then set off on a mission to produce personalised pots to celebrate real bodies and support body neutrality.

Louisa and Emma will speak together about both their solo projects and the work they have been creating together. []

2 pm - 6 pm: In the afternoon we're aiming to give you the tools and insight to start your creative career. We'll be joined by three speakers and workshop holders, each with their own pearls of wisdom to give to you.

Kristyna Baczynski - Illustrator and Comic Book Artist

You might already know Kristyna from last year, she was kind enough to give us some more of her time this IWD!

Kristyna Baczynski is an illustrator and comic book artist. Freelancing from her studio in Leeds she creates comics, zines, posters, apparel, stationery and more for a wide range of clients that have included Anorak, The Royal Shakespeare Company and Etsy. In 2017 she illustrated her first two children's books.

As well as self-publishing her own comics and zines (Hand Me Down, A Measure Of Space, Vessel, Vantage) as well as her first graphic novel Retrograde Orbit, Kristyna has worked with publishers at home and internationally such as Fantagraphics and Image. Her comics have been nominated for two British Comic Book Awards and an Eisner Award. []

Eve Finlay Miller

Eve Finlay Miller is a Leeds abased artist, videographer and mural painter. She is currently an artist in residence at Leeds Arts University and is part of the I AM Collective. []

Leeds Arts University

Sharon Heleine from Leeds Arts University will be running a creative CV workshop to get you prepped and ready to apply for your dream job.
