Room 103

Room 103

It was seventy years ago that George Orwell completed his final draft of 1984, since when, what was once a piece of fiction set in a dystopian future of totalitarian oppression, has now become a virtual reality, with the world of Oceania and the figurehead of Big Brother becoming synonymous with the post-truth world in which we now, unwittingly, seem to find ourselves living in.

It is therefore not surprising that this enduring resonance, that has continued to raise its head throughout the rise, fall and resurrection of the Cold War, along with the visual imagery and ideological conjecture that Orwell's writing creates, should provide a continuing stimulus for artists of conscience and political resistance, and it was with this in mind that Glenn Ibbitson, a Leeds-born/Welsh-based artist, hatched the idea to bring together a wealth of left-field artists to create an amorphic exhibition aimed at reassessing the impact of Orwell in the context of the present day.

Taking its name from the room where the BBC broadcast its wartime arts programmes, (at the same time that Orwell could have been found scribbling away just across the corridor), Room 103 brings together themes of surveillance, identity and thought control and mixes them together through paint, print, video and photography to create a visual exploration of Orwell's legacy whilst, at the same time, acting as a reminder of the succession of events that have led us to the current state of affairs.

Having already had a successful show in Manchester, the exhibition is now making its way over the Pennines for a short stint at Studio 24 in Mabgate, Leeds, where, at the Friday night opening event, in addition to the exhibition of artworks, there will be live performances by The Commoners Choir singing a specially composed Orwell song and a short unplugged set  by Le POUM of songs written in response to Orwell's Homage to Catalonia.

Alongside the work of established artists, there will also be a selection of work created by students from the Art Enterprise degree course at the University Centre of Leeds City College.

This may be the only time that Room 103 comes to Leeds, so, make sure  you don't miss it.
