To Be Here Now - Album Launch Party

To Be Here Now - Album Launch Party

The late, great John Peel OBE once said that there were more bands living and working in the LS6 area of Leeds than anywhere else in the country, and the same feels true today. TO BE HERE NOW (released on vinyl and available for digital download this October) is an attempt to document, preserve and celebrate some of the jazz and improvised music currently being recorded and performed within the Leeds scene.

The jazz compilation was imagined, programmed and compiled by saxophonist BEN POWLING and venue owner JACK SIMPSON at Jack’s café and venue HYDE PARK BOOK CLUB. Despite being relatively new, Hyde Park Book Club has already established itself as a thriving hub for new and improvised music in the city and many of the bands who feature on To Be Here Now, have gigged, rehearsed and even started out at Hyde Park Book Club.

To Be Here Now will be launched at its birthplace, Hyde Park Book Club, on MONDAY 1ST OCTOBER. The event will include a first listen to the album, live performances from some of those who appear on the record and a live Q&A with Jack, Ben and Leeds jazz stalwart Lubi Jovanovic. Plus, records played from Endless DJs. Tickets are Pay As You Feel.

To Be Here Now was recorded across a few days, in late 2017 and early 2018, by WILL JACKSON of Soundworks at EIGER STUDIOS. The compilation features Leeds' finest jazz artists:

JASMINE – An emerging quintet led by alto saxophonist and recent Leeds College of Music Graduate Jasmine Whalley. Jasmine draws influence from artists such as Soweto Kinch and MadVillain to create compelling instrumental jazz with a modern sensibility.

SKWID INK – Skwid Ink are a rowdy, raucous and theatrical quartet from the Leeds based independent label, Tight Lines. Skwid take inspiration from a wide range of different artists and use their musical training to try and create something truly unique.

WANDERING MONSTER – Ferocious five-piece Wandering Monster perform intricately arranged instrumental rock music that draws on jazz sensibilities and sound worlds. Moments of exciting, natural improvisation occur within involved written material. The result is a sound that is intense and raucous, yet also dynamic, sensitive and spontaneous.

AYANA – Led by bassist Sam Dutton-Taylor, Ayana’s music is informed by ethio-jazz godfather Mulatu Astatke as well as US free jazz pioneers Sun Ra and Pharoah Sanders. Winding melodies intertwine with rugged improvisation amongst ethereal soundscapes.

TIP TOE – Intimate, soulful earth music delivered in an artfully unassuming style. Blending captivating voices and a grounded electro-acoustic core, Tip Toe’s “chamber funk” is an expression of the frequency shared between band, audience, music and life – and it resonates.

ANCIENT INFINITY ORCHESTRA – Formed in 2017, Ancient Infinity Orchestra strives to contribute to the idea that music can change the world.
