LIVEwire: An Evening of Electric Spoken Word Poetr

LIVEwire: An Evening of Electric Spoken Word Poetr

LIVEwire Leeds #3

Louise Fazackerley and Evrah Rose
plus open mic
hosted by Matt Abbott.

Nymphs & Thugs are the UK's leading spoken word record label. Since forming in 2015, they've become home to Louise Fazackerley, Matt Abbott, Toria Garbutt, Salena Godden, Kevin P. Gilday and Luke Wright. Their 'LIVEwire' events are rapidly developing a reputation as one of the most electric nights on the scene.

Their new series of 'LIVEwire' events include four regional dates around England - Manchester (20 Sep), Bristol (13 Nov), Birmingham (22 Feb), Colchester (29 Apr) - as well as four resident nights at Hyde Park Book Club in Leeds. Each event will feature a unique line-up, with at least one N&T artist on the bill.

The first two Leeds events pulled no punches, with sets from Salena Godden, Nafeesa Hamid, Joelle Taylor and Ollie O'Neill. The third event bursts into the roaring '20s with headline slots from Louise Fazackerley and Evrah Rose, plus open mic hosted by Matt Abbott (details of how to sign up below).

With work rooted in word-witchery and the working-class, Louise Fazackerley is a poet from the exotic Northern streets of Orwell's Wigan. In performance she explores the synergy between poetry and movement. Her socially conscious writing makes the ugly beautiful and the mundane fantastical.

Winner of the BBC Radio New voices award, Louise is signed to Nymphs & Thugs spoken word label where she released two audio books; 'Love Is A Battlefield' and 'Bird St.'. Her brand-new collection 'The Lolitas' is the subject of 'Love Is A Rebellious Bird'; an installation and film work by international artists AL + AL. She recently supported punk poet legend Dr. John Cooper Clarke on his sold-out tour. You may have seen or heard her on BBC 1, BBC Radio 3, 4, 5 or read her blog in The Guardian Northerner.

Evrah Rose is a Wrexham-born poet and spoken word performer. A self-aware and passionate activist, Evrah uses her own experience and the experiences of others to tell rhythmic and hard-hitting truths about mental health, gender inequality, sexual abuse, addiction and domestic violence. Unafraid to speak about what matters Evrah has been featured online at BBC Sesh, BBC One, Two, three racking up over 5 million views. Evrah has appeared as a guest on BBC Radio Wales, has been featured on BBC Wales News and BBC two when commissioned to write a piece to commemorate Wale's Grand Slam win at the Six Nations 2019.

Evrah has quickly become a prolific voice of spoken word in Wales and surrounding areas, a keen advocate for equal rights Evrah is a force on stage and never fails to elicit important conversations both raising awareness and social consciousness. Evrah's debut poetry collection 'Unspoken' is available from Verve Poetry Press.

Matt Abbott is rapidly establishing himself on the UK's scene. His debut one-man show 'Two Little Ducks' earned 5* reviews at Edinburgh Fringe in 2017 and on a 22-date UK theatre tour last autumn, and was accompanied by his debut poetry collection on Verve. He formed N&T in spring 2015 and fronts alternative act Skint & Demoralised.

There are 6 open mic slots available on a first come, first served basis. Please email to reserve your slot. Please note that these slots are a maximum of 5 minutes in length.
