Nancy de Garrs - Saving the Brontes

Nancy de Garrs - Saving the Brontes

Meet Nancy de Garrs, servant, housekeeper and friend to the Brontës. From Thornton to Haworth she served them as cook, cleaner, nurse, nanny, storyteller; she shared their ups and downs, births and deaths.
In this one-woman show, find out about her life with the family; hear how Nancy kept in touch with them after she left, especially Patrick and Charlotte; how she helped to clear Patrick’s name of accusations by Mrs Gaskill. and how he cleared Nancy’s too. Discover how Nancy’s two marriages changed her fortunes; what led to her life at the workhouse and the journey of her Brontë ‘relics’; how she avoided a pauper’s funeral but ended up in an unmarked grave at Undercliffe Cemetery.
