WALTON Coronation March: Orb & Sceptre
BACH Pastorale
LISZT Variations on Weinen, klagen, sorgen, zagen
LEMARE Andantino
WHITLOCK Scherzetto from Sonata in C minor
LEMARE Carmen Fantasy

Joy, reflection, drama and humour are present in about equal measure in this grand finale to the 2017/18 programmes here at the Town Hall. Sir William McKie’s demanding arrangement of the 1953 Coronation March _Orb and Sceptre _reminds us of his days as a virtuoso City Organist in Melbourne, Australia in the 1930s. Lighter fare comes in the form of Whitlock’s _Scherzetto _with its delicious rhythmic shifts and 1930s harmony and Edwin H Lemare’s _Andantino _in D flat [famous as the basis of the popular song _Moonlight and Roses _with lyrics by Daniel O’Donnell and a song that received something of a rejuvenation from and after Jim Reeves’ 1964 recording]. The centre-piece of this final recital of the season is much more serious stuff! Liszt’s Variations on _Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen_treat the chorale featured in the _Crucifixus _of Bach’s _Mass in B minor _and as the basis for his Cantata 12. The season comes to a close with Edwin Lemare’s sure-footed medley of well known themes from Bizet’s opera _Carmen _[1875]; the scoring, especially of the exotic and sensual _Habanera, _is masterly throughout and, important in a medley, each tune is nicely etched within the whole – with none outstaying its welcome and each subject afforded due honour.
