Free pre-concert talk at 6.45pm by Brian Newbould.

Following the death of Stalin in 1953 the Soviet Union enjoyed a period of relative liberalisation, during which Shostakovich wrote some of his most passionate music. He wrote his second piano concerto for the 19th birthday of his son Maxim, who premiered the piece in 1957 at his graduation ceremony at the Moscow Conservatory. This light hearted work was recently voted 3rd most popular piano concerto in the 2015 Classic FM Hall of Fame.

Twelve years after the disastrous premiere of his first symphony under the direction of a drunk conductor, Rachmaninov penned his second symphony. This time he took no chances and conducted the premiere himself and the piece was very well received, earning him a Glinka Award and restoring his confidence as a symphonic composer. This is one of Rachmaninov’s most famous works - monumental, grand and full of recognisable melodies. Listen out for the exquisite slow_ adagio_ with its long clarinet solo.

The concert will be finished by approximately 9.45pm.
