Free pre-concert talk at 6.45pm by Peter Whitfield.

Finlandia is a patriotic tone poem that was written in protest against the increasing censorship in Sibelius’ home country of Finland, largely controlled by Tsarist Russia. The music includes the _Finlandia_ _Hymn_, and rousing, turbulent melodies representing the struggle of the Finnish people.

Beethoven’s last complete piano concerto, No 5, is grand and triumphant, fully showcasing the piano. The three-movement_ Emperor_ concerto is a flood of beautiful and intense sound, and the title, given after Beethoven’s death, reflects the work’s stature, difficulty and impressiveness, as it re-wrote the relationship between orchestra and piano.

Sibelius was commissioned to compose his Symphony No 5 by the Finnish Government in celebration of his fiftieth birthday which had been declared a national holiday. Writing in his diary at the time of composition, Sibelius compared his musical ideas and motifs to streams and rivers, all flowing towards the sea.

The concert will be finished by approximately 9.30pm.
