Tredegar Town Band

Tredegar Town Band

Leeds Best of Brass 2019/20: Tredegar Town Band

The origins of the 2019 Champion Band of Wales can be traced back to 1849, although it wasn’t until 1876 following victory at the Welsh National Eisteddfod that the band was formally constituted. History shows that early contesting victories for Tredegar Band were sporadic, although over the last 40 years the band has become one of the world’s elite performers, as well as multiple winners of major contests - claiming British Open titles in 2010 and 2013.

A self-supporting organisation with a renowned reputation for inventiveness and innovation, the band represent the town that bears its name with pride - literally so with the bands musical contribution to the BAFTA Award winning film, _Pride_.

Further significant artistic achievements have included the world premiere of Gavin Higgins’ critically acclaimed _Dark Arteries_ production with the Rambert Ballet at Sadler’s Wells, which was shortlisted for a Royal Philharmonic Music Society Award, as well as being invited to take part in the London _Pride _celebrations.

The band has received critical acclaim for its CD releases _Dark Arteries_ and _War Memorials_ as well as for its recent world premiere at Llandaff Cathedral of the renaissance masterpiece _Spem in Alium_ by Thomas Tallis.

2018 saw the band play a major role in the 70th anniversary celebrations of the National Health Service - giving the world premiere of a new commission entitled, _Legacy_ both in its home town, and in becoming the first brass band to perform in The Speakers House in the heart of the Palace of Westminster.

In addition the band also performed with Tim Minchin at the Old Vic Theatre’s 200th Anniversary Bicentenary Ball and gave a promenade concert at the Hofburg Imperial Palace in Austria. The band returned to Austria in November to perform at the magnificent Brucknerhaus on the banks of the River Danube as part of the prestigious Linz Brass Festival.

This concert is part of the Leeds Best of Brass 2019/20 series.
