PHILOSOPHY & FILM: The Exterminating Angel

PHILOSOPHY & FILM: The Exterminating Angel

Exterminating Angel, Bunuel's surrealist portrayal of dinner guests cursed to remain in a room indefinitely, is a rather frustrating film to interpret. Roger Ebert suggested that the afflicted represent Spain's ruling class, under Franco, "trapped in their own bourgeois cul-de-sac". Though there's something to this, it's far too flatfooted as an interpretation; rather, Exterminating Angel investigates the peeling-off-the-costume effects of indefinite undesired interaction with one another. Dr. Jack Woods will lead a discussion after the film around these issues. Some of his recent work investigates the relationship of etiquette and other conventional norms to our reasons in general.
