Tongue Cutters

Tongue Cutters

In Norway children as young as six work as cod tongue cutters. The tongues are considered a delicacy in countries like China and Japan. This job has always been reserved for the children and, rather than be seen as exploitation, it is a tradition that has existed as long as the fishing industry, where children learn many valuable skills. Nine year old city girl Ylva from Oslo is following in her mother’s footsteps and travelling north to try tongue cutting for the first time, where she will be taught by ten year old Tobias. We follow their friendship and get to see how children, when given the
opportunity, take on responsibility for work, life and for each other in this empowering and fascinating documentary.
