In the summer of 1968, civil rights protests were happening everywhere in the USA, following the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr in April. At the medal ceremony at October’s Mexico Olympics, two black American athletes chose their moment to stage this protest in front of the whole world.

Gold medallist Tommie Smith and bronze medallist John Carlos gave a gloved ‘Black Power Salute’ during the playing of the American national anthem and the stadium went quiet, it is one of the most memorable and iconic moments in 20th century sporting history.

In between the two men stood the silver medallist, Peter Norman, who was from Melbourne, Australia. Un-noticed by many, he was also silently playing a part in solidarity and in opposition to racism. This film is a testimony to an iconic moment and the individual repercussions that followed.
