Tuesday Wonder: Rockers

Tuesday Wonder: Rockers

Plus introduction from Dr Emily Zobel Marshall

It is 40 years since this cult Jamaican movie first hit UK screens. Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace plays a rasta drummer who independently distributes reggae records using his beloved motorcycle. Featuring reggae artists Burning Spear, Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth and Dillinger, this light-hearted drama presents an authentic picture of the Jamaican music and socio-political scene of the 1970s.

Rockers will be introduced by Dr Emily Zobel Marshall (School of Cultural Studies & Humanities, Leeds Beckett University). Emily is an expert in the role of ‘Trickster’ figures in the literatures and cultures of Africa and its Diaspora and has published widely in this area. Her introduction to Rockers and The Harder They Come (29th October) will invite us to consider how the films she has chosen resonate with how the figure appears in Caribbean folklore.

Shining a light on those hidden gems that you really shouldn't miss.

This film is part of our Black History Month season, exploring & celebrating black culture, history & identity on screen.
