19th-century Leeds Radicalism

Details

A new exhibition, exploring the rich radical tradition of 19th-century Leeds, using books and other materials from the Leeds Central Library collections.

Broadly split into two sections – Leeds radicalism to and from 1832  – the exhibition showcases books and pamphlets by such writers and activists as James Watson [https://secretlibraryleeds.net/2018/01/26/voices-from-the-past-19th-century-leeds-working-class-autobiographies/], Richard Carlile, Richard Oastler, James and Alice Mann, F.R. Lees [https://secretlibraryleeds.net/2016/05/27/19th-century-political-cartoons/], John Francis Bray, Joshua Hobson and Joseph Barker [https://capitadiscovery.co.uk/leeds/items/196660?query=joseph+barker+thoresby&resultsUri=items%3Fquery%3Djoseph%2Bbarker%2Bthoresby]. You can also see a genuine 19th-century policeman’s truncheon – used during the 1842 Plug Riot disturbances in Leeds, as well as two political cartoons [https://secretlibraryleeds.net/collections/political-cartoons/] published during the 1874 and 1880 Leeds parliamentary elections.
