Fosse In Film: Cabaret

Fosse In Film: Cabaret

Details

As part of a Liza Minnelli double bill evening.

This 1972 cinema classic is a musical drama starring Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey and Michael York. Set in Berlin during the Weimar Republic in 1931, under the presence of the growing Nazi Party, the film is loosely based on the 1966 Broadway musical Cabaret by Kander and Ebb, which was adapted from the novel The Berlin Stories / Goodbye to Berlin (1939) by Christopher Isherwood and the 1951 play I Am a Camera adapted from the same book.

This multi award winning film was a bounce back for Fosse after Sweet Charity flopped and taught it Fosse that realism in musicals had a better response than unjustifiable musical numbers, i.e randomly bursting into song. In 1973 not only did Fosse win best director for Cabaret, he won an Emmy for Liza with a Z and two Tony’s for Pippin. The first and most likely only time this will ever be achieved.

“[Liza] displays energy, verve, and professionalism of the first order. It’s classical Broadway style, crisply directed, every element calculated to bring out the best of the performer at the peak of her powers.” Culture Vulture, 2006

This event is part of a Liza Minnelli double bill evening. Tickets will be available online in August 2019, or you can buy tickets on the door. Special 25% discount if tickets to both screenings of the double bill are bought.
