Lift to the Scaffold (Ascenseur pour l'échafaud)

Made when he was just twenty-four years old, Louis Malle's mesmerising debut feature is a stylish and suspenseful noir thriller, taking place over the course of one restless Paris night. Two lovers Florence (Jeanne Moreau) and Julien (Maurice Ronet) plot to murder Florence's husband, a wealthy arms dealer, in what appears to be the perfect crime.

Set to a hauntingly melancholic jazz score improvised by Miles Davis, and shot with luminous cinematography, this homage to Hollywood noir is now regarded as a seminal French film of the 1950s and a forerunner of the nouvelle vague.

With this special 60th anniversary screening, we pay tribute to the remarkable talent of the late Jeanne Moreau, and the film that propelled her to iconic stardom.

Louis Malle / France / 1958 / 91 minutes / Certificate PG

Please note: Doors open at 8:30pm and the film starts at 9pm.
