Headingley Social with The Devil's Jukebox

Headingley Social with The Devil's Jukebox

Details

An evening of good company, vinyl and live music in the heart of the community. Italian street food and vinyl selection by Salvo’s [https://www.facebook.com/SalvosRestaurantandSalumeria/].

Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya and the likes on wax by Gip. Live music comes from The Devil’s Jukebox [http://www.devilsjukebox.co.uk/].

God’s at the helm, the Devil’s in the boiler-room. The Devil’s Jukebox are five vaude-villains playing red-hot ragtime, dirty, dirty 20’s jazz and scurrilous blues from the wrong side of the tracks; they surprised us all to hell and back when they appeared in Headingley last year with one of the most entertaining evenings of the year. We need this show regularly to remind us that though latte is popular, scalding hot strong bitter black espresso is always available.

Red hot ragtime, vintage viper jazz and scurrilous popular tunes from the twenties and thirties is where the Devil’s Jukebox lives. The band features Leeds Jazz legend Jim Lodge on clarinet, Pinky Camber Sands on banjo bass, Lotus Dubois on jazz ukulele, Scarlet Bonansea on harmonium and suitcase percussion, and Dr Bordello on hooter-phones and vocals in a line-up which pays authentic homage to the wild and eclectic hokum bands of that era.

They’ve just released their third album _Sure is Righteous!, _which has been described as _‘1920’s Chicago Good Time Music that can be enjoyed by all’ _– Just Jazz Magazine, and ‘_Music of the 1930’s full of booze, sex, humour and no little talent, a joy to lift the spirits!’ _– Blues Matters.

_‘__Five piece vaudevillian sensations, playing an infectious brand of red hot ragtime’_ – The Yorkshire Times

_‘A flamboyantly entertaining spectacle’ –_ Leeds Guide

_‘A marvellous Tom Waits-esque cabaret’- _The Guardian

_‘Darkly surreal, sinister and bewitching’_ – Sandman Magazine

Expect a raucous night of rags, tangos, charlestons, and more…

Pay as you can. We suggest £5 but will not turn you away for lack of funds.
