Hidden Stories

14th February 2023 - 31st December 2023

Leeds is a place dating back hundreds of years with a population of around 800,000 people, meaning so many tales have yet to be told.

Artists and researchers will be working with communities and heritage organisations to share the hidden stories of our city.

Harewood House is joining forces with visual artist Lucy Orta to explore the relationship between the estate, food and local communities thorugh an updated version of one of Studio Orta’s world reknowned artworks.

Meanwhile Thackray Medical Museum is working with Sable Radio to investigate hidden narratives and produce after-hours theme nights for young people.

Arts organisation MILIM CIC is collaborating with script writers and the Jewish community to produce a performance piece exploring the heritage of the Leeds Jewish community, and curator Gill Crawshaw is working with disabled artists to explore the history of disabled mill workers in the city.

The Royal Armouries, author Kit Heyam and members of the LGBTQIA community are investigating the gendering of items used in warfare. Mill Hill Chapel and Lens Labs Leeds are working with faith groups to produce a photography exhibition exploring place, religion and community.

Finally, The British Library and Studio McGuire are heading to Holbeck to turn local myths and legends into an immersive digital installation.
