In this lecture Anne Bean will expand on these four perspectives: process, collaboration, improvisation and life/art. Recently, Anne Bean was asked to choose and write about four works of hers, which she regarded as central to her practice, for a book on Performance Art. She selected works that uncovered as many aspects of her concerns as four works from a fifty-year career could. The first work underlined ideas around process-based work and the overlap of different aspects of visual arts, from photography, painting and drawing to sculpture and installation, that arises from and is made  expansive through, a performance art ethos. In the second, she considered collaborative and collective work and the strategies they open for profound insights into ‘the space between us.’ In the third she reflected on improvisatory practice especially in regard to sound and treating sound and visuals as inter-relating sculptural forms. She first articulated ideas around the fourth work in her dissertation, in 1973, at Reading University: ‘What is Art? And what am I doing in it?’ querying art as life and life as art Anne Bean has shown in major galleries including Tate, Hayward, Serpentine and Royal Academy and has received several large-scale awards such as a Millennium Science Commission by the Royal Society, British Council Creative Collaborations to work internationally with women from countries of conflict and a Tate/LADA Legacy: Thinker in Residence Award, resulting in _TAPS_, exploring improvisatory experimental practice. She was artist in residence in several institutions including Franklin Furnace, New York, Whitechapel Gallery, London and Sidney Nolan Trust, Wales. Her solo and collaborative work has been shown in numerous festivals worldwide from Post War Art & Culture Festival, Iraq, Festival of Light, Zambia. Cervantino Festival, Mexico, London Contemporary Music Festival to festivals in Tasmania, Hong Kong, Australia, Japan, New York and across Europe She has had several shows with Matt’s Gallery, London, including _Radiant Fields, Autobituary_ , _WAKE_ and _Moments of Consciousness and_…. In 2018 and 2019 she had solo shows in London at Coleman Space and England & Co. and group work at South London gallery, Cooper Gallery, Dundee and _Unlimited Action_, at Tate Britain. A major monograph on her work, _Self Etc_., was published by Intellect books and Live Art Development Agency, in 2018.
