Wellington Bridge to the Viaduct and back

Discover where dyeing, tanning, foundries and terraces used to be and what's there now

Waterfront locations near the old town centre were in short supply as industrialisation accelerated, so the valley of the River Aire upstream towards Kirkstall became progressively developed – with negative implications for the river itself. Houses, churches, libraries, schools and businesses came along to supply the needs of the factory workers.

There are signs of past times, surprising new activities - including an important colourful 20th century industry - and many acres of land awaiting a phase beyond colonisation by buddleia. Much remains to be done to reconnect this part of Leeds with the river itself.

Come and imagine the past and find out about transformations since the industrial heyday.

Meet in the car park beside Grosvenor Casino.
