15th October 2020 - 15th October 2020

Rescheduled from 29 March 2020.

From the humblest of beginnings and in order to get away from the abuse at home, Veronica joined the prison service in 1958 and spent 36 years serving in various roles eventually rising to the rank of Governor. She trained in Holloway Women’s Prison before serving in several other women’s institutions around the country and, after the introduction of equal opportunities legislation, she became Deputy Governor at Armley Prison, one of the first females to achieve this rank in a men’s prison. An evening with Veronica will include highlights from her career such as prisoner escapes, riots and hostage taking, and include stories, told with both compassion and humour, about some notorious prisoners such as Myra Hindley, the Price Sisters and Charles Bronson.

Her book Veronica’s Bird will be available to buy/have signed at the end of the talk.
